Spring 2018
Hangar-berg
During the first three weeks of the design studio , the 60 students attending the course were asked to design a new studio building situated at the ETH Hönngerberg campus. There were 5 potential building sites.
The building is placed near the back end of the plot. It is 50 X 80 meters big. A square is created on the south-eastern facade to allow a connection to the existing two D-ARCH buildings. It consists of a industrial factory hangar spanning 50 meters with a curved steel truss as its primary structure and a separate platform structure made out of wood, housing the studio spaces and the chairs.

The platforms are independent from the hangar structure and can be adapted or expanded later on. The hangar structure is covered by a shell consisting of wood panels and glazing. The volume of the hangar is determined by the daily air consumption of its 500 occupants.
The ground floor of the hall follows the existing terrain with 3 levels. The studio platforms are oriented around the two main critique spaces on the ground floor. Interaction between the students themselves and the chairs is the driving force behind design.
