Centro de Estudios HIDROGRAFICOS

spatial structure

with Leandra Krummenacher

The analysis of the Centro de Estudios Hidrogaficos from Miguel Fisac led us to the idea, how a structural system can have and create a spatial and architectural quality that is otherwise not possible. With the use of a pre-cast post-tensioned system, the “Bone Beams”, a unique space is made.

We started to explore how different structural systems could in turn create unique spatial experiences. We explored possibilities from traditional structural systems, such as trusses, coffered beams to special systems like the X formed beams of the church in Baranzate from Angelo Mangiarotti.

What we focused on each of these systems were how they affected and interacted with the spaces they helped form, by changing the variables like the room height, structure type and their dimensions. In some cases the Structure would fill the whole space in others it would create invisible boundaries or define spaces on a different plane.

The next step was to collect these individual spaces and put them in a system. For that we propose a building that combines different types of structures and utilizes them as the main actors of creating spaces. This idea of the building manifested itself in a 1:50 scale concept model.
